We took part in the EMBL TREC (Traversing European Coastlines) expedition in 2023 and 2024, as part of an international EMBL-EPFL-UNIGE team (Dey, Schwab, Saka, Hamel, Guichard).
Together, we collected and fixed more than 300 samples across Europe, spanning multiple size fractions, habitats, and life cycles.
Our current efforts focus on coupling Expansion Microscopy (Cryo-ExM and U-ExM) with 18S FISH for species identification and subcellular imaging. By refining these methods, we aim to generate an atlas of native eukaryotic cellular biodiversity with unprecedented 3D resolution and to lay the groundwork for assessing the long-term effects of climate change on free-living microplankton populations.
