The ExÂME Community
Expansion Microscopy is at its best when shared. A central goal of ExÂME is to democratize Expansion Microscopy for microbial eukaryotes, making the method accessible well beyond a handful of specialist labs.
We do this by offering free pilot tests of new organisms and by running on-site training several times a year. These workshops take place either in our lab in Geneva or in the Dey Lab at EMBL Heidelberg, where researchers can learn the protocols hands-on and bring them back to their own labs.
As of 2025, ExÂME has helped more than 30 laboratories establish Expansion Microscopy in their research, and together we have expanded and imaged over 200 microbial eukaryote species, with many more to come.
For the workshops to be most fruitful, we recommend participants try ExM in their own labs first. During one to two weeks in Geneva or Heidelberg, we then provide reagents, expert guidance, and microscope access, keeping groups small so everyone has time to expand and image their own samples and leave with high-quality results. While we cannot cover travel or accommodation, we are happy to support participants in applying for travel grants or research exchange funding to make their visit possible.
